Soapnut (also Reetha or Soapkaya): the Gold for an eco-friendly householder
Since the establishment of Arsha Yoga we have been looking for an effective yet eco-friendly cleaning agent. As most areas of India do not have water purifying plants, waste water is going directly into the soil polluting ground water. Sometimes the solution lies at the tip of our nose. Also in this case soapnuts originated in India but have long been forgotten. At times of grandparents they were used for cleaning gold ornaments. However, its scope of use is extensive. In the western world soapnuts are widely used as washing detergent, but surprisingly in India, in its land of origin, they are hard to come across unless you buy them in one of the metropolitan cities in a fashionable organic shop. Other than that there are some big suppliers on the market mainly using the product for export purpose. Often you can find a forgotten tree in someone's backyard, so keep your eyes open.
Soapnut is actually a fruit with a seed inside. Only the shell is useful as it contains the cleaning agent called saponin. Therefore, it is better to buy already deseeded soapnuts. The price is a little higher than the ones containing seeds, but considering the weight of the seed, the price is almost equal then. For an effective use in washing machines, soak them in water overnight. I do use 2 handfuls of soapnuts for 1 laundry load (6 kg). Depending on the water quality you can reuse them. I do reuse them once again. The best way is to check if any juice remains in the shells and produces foam.
Another great use of soapnut is for washing dishes. For that you need to grind the shells into a powder. Any public mill can do that for you. You will find your dishes free from oil and sparkling clean!
If you need to wash your floor, just soak a few soapnuts in water and squeeze them to get foam.
Another advantage of soapnuts is that it is 100% safe and natural also suitable for people with allergies and sensitive skin. You can even use it for your hair instead of a shampoo.
Herein, I would like to encourage business corporations as well as private householders to take advantage of the immense benefit of soapnuts for your own health as well as preservation of health of your children and future generations.
If you care, please share this post and help us to spread the awareness.
